Baosheng Temple

The spring breeze is gentle and warm, turning yet another page in the annals of history. Stepping into Baosheng Temple in Luzhi, this thousand-year-old monastery—founded in the Liang Dynasty and boasting a history of more than 1,500 years—still preserves relics from the Tang Dynasty, including sculpted arhat murals and sutra pillars, as well as Song‑era stone brackets for banners and column bases.

The Hall of the Heavenly Kings, originally built in the Song Dynasty and renovated during the Ming Dynasty, preserves the architectural style of that era. Admire the graceful flying eaves and upturned corners of its roof, and within, you’ll find displays recounting the tale of how Tang‑dynasty clay statues of arhats were rescued—stories that, even today, stir a profound sense of devotion.

Stepping into the Baosheng Temple Museum of Ancient Artifacts, visitors are greeted by a wall‑mounted sculpture of arhats created by Yang Huizhi, the “Sculpture Sage” of the Tang Dynasty. The figures are exquisitely crafted, vividly rendered, and strikingly lifelike. Students carefully examined the intricate details of the sculptures and listened as their teacher recounted the story of how these Tang‑dynasty arhat statues were rescued, gaining a lively lesson in history and culture.

Strolling through the West Courtyard of Baosheng Temple, the students paused before the bronze statue of the renowned scholar Lu Guimeng at Qingfeng Pavilion, learning about his decision to retire to Luzhi and adopt the self‑styled name “Mr. Fuli,” and savoring the poetic charm and elegant spirit that defined his life.

The thousand-year-old ginkgo tree has once again sprouted tender, verdant leaves. Students gather around the ancient tree, listening to its story and sensing its vibrant vitality. In the courtyard, the jacaranda trees are in full bloom; some students huddle in small groups, sharing their observations, while others explore the stele corridor, savoring the cultural charm of Baosheng Temple.

Wander through the cultural landscapes of Jiangnan and savor the tales of its celebrated figures.

Ye Shengtao Memorial Hall

In the spring of 1917, at the invitation of Principal Wu Binruo, Ye Shengtao came to Wuxian County’s Fifth Higher Primary School in Luzhi to teach, where he launched a bold and far-reaching educational reform that ensured the enduring vitality of Luzhi’s cultural heritage. As time has passed, Ye’s teachings—such as “Teaching is meant to make teaching unnecessary” and “When reading, avoid rote memorization; don’t get stuck in endless, narrow interpretation. Diligent and assiduous though you may be, books should never become alien to you”—continue to inspire generations to come.

The Ye Shengtao Memorial Hall was built on the very site of the “No. 5 High School” where Mr. Ye once taught. Stepping into the bright exhibition hall, the students respectfully paid their respects before the bronze bust of Mr. Ye, and through carefully reading the detailed exhibits and viewing his personal relics, they gained a deeper understanding of his life and achievements, while experiencing the noble spirit of this exemplary teacher of his generation.

Shen Residence

Shen Baihan, whose given name was Changwei and courtesy name was Baihan, was born into the Shen clan of Luzhi. In his youth, he traveled to Japan to pursue his studies; upon returning home, he founded Fuli Primary School, recruited enlightened local figures as teachers, and introduced curricula in Chinese language, mathematics, history and geography, drawing, and moral education, integrating cutting-edge educational principles into his teaching. He also established Peiben Kindergarten, making significant contributions to the educational development of Luzhi.
Visiting the Shen Residence, one finds two couplets hanging in the main hall, the Le Shan Hall. The first reads: “With success in business, all achievements spring from a steadfast resolve; of all pursuits, reading is most delightful, and outstanding talents arise from noble education.” The second proclaims: “Harmony and auspicious radiance, pure reputation and virtuous conduct; reverence for virtue and joy in righteousness—harmony with benevolence and compassion.” The former couplet serves as an admonition to future generations, encapsulating the Shen family’s aspirations and accomplishments; the latter, closely tied to the hall’s name, expresses the hope that through “le shan”—doing good—one may attain the highest spiritual realm. Here, one can learn the story of the Shen clan and experience their family ethos of valuing culture and education, as well as their commitment to kindness and charity.

In the calligraphy and painting hall of the Shen Residence, a special exhibition titled “Ink and Sound: A Poetic Ode to Jiangnan” by the renowned painter Shen Mo is currently on display. Visitors can immerse themselves in the elegant, poetic landscapes of Jiangnan brought to life through the artist’s masterful ink techniques.

Wang Tao Memorial Hall

Wang Tao was born into a scholarly family in Luzhi. His greatest achievement was founding the “Huanxu Ribao,” the first Chinese-language newspaper in modern China entirely managed and published by Chinese nationals. During the more than ten years he served as its chief editor, the paper gained renown for its concise, incisive political essays that sharply criticized contemporary ills, pioneering a new style of journalistic political writing in modern China and earning him the title “the father of Chinese newspapers.”

The Wang Tao Memorial Hall houses the Wang Tao Life and Achievements Exhibition Room, the Henghua Pavilion, and the Taoyuan Garden. In the exhibition room, a scroll‑style display method gently unfolds the vicissitudes of Wang Tao’s life, allowing visitors to appreciate his patriotic spirit and forward‑looking ideals.

Follow the Chinese language textbook and encounter wonders that leave you in awe.

Wansheng Rice Mill

Mr. Ye Shengtao’s celebrated essay, “Three or Five Dou More,” brought Wansheng Rice Mill into the public eye. A visit to Wansheng Rice Mill reveals a counter for buying and selling grain, adorned with a sign reading “A Gathering of Merchants from All Corners.” On the counter, grains and legumes are displayed as educational exhibits. Behind the shop lies a spacious courtyard paved with stone slabs, once used as granaries for rice processing and grain storage.

Strolling through the stone‑paved courtyard, one can see traditional tools such as stone mills and water wheels, while the walls of the covered corridor display both the original text of “Three or Five Dou More” and its accompanying comic strips. Here, students read the original work, gaining insight into the scene of rice being sold at market when the new harvest arrived and learning about the historical context, all the while sensing Mr. Ye Shengtao’s deep concern for the common people and society.

Luzhi Water Town Agricultural Tools Museum

During the Tang Dynasty, the poet Lu Guimeng, while living in seclusion at Fuli, composed a work titled “The Classic of the Plow and Harrow.” The book details the manufacture and proper use of agricultural tools employed in the cultivation of paddy fields in the Jiangnan region. Step into the Luzhi Water‑Village Agricultural Tools Museum, where more than a hundred authentic farming implements—among them the Jiangdong plow—are on display, offering a vivid, real‑world chronicle of Jiangnan’s agricultural heritage.

These agricultural tools are categorized into seven stages of the farming process: plowing and land preparation, sowing and transplanting, intertilling and weeding, irrigation and water management, harvesting and transportation, threshing and processing, and weighing. Here, visitors can learn about the sequential methods of cultivation and gain an understanding of the operating principles behind tools such as the Jiangdong plow and the waterwheel.
