On July 17, the three-day “Luduan Class” summer camp for children came to a successful close amid laughter and cheerful chatter. Set against the backdrop of cultural landmarks such as the Baosheng Temple in Luzhi, the Shen Residence, and the Wansheng Rice Mill, the program wove together hands-on experiences like playing Lianxiang, crafting handmade cloth bags, and making radish dried snacks—each an opportunity to engage with intangible cultural heritage. Along the way, the children forged new friendships, gained fresh knowledge, and honed their all‑around skills through immersive activities; every smiling face radiated the joy of growth.

Day One

The camp is in full swing, with a tour of the ancient town.

On July 15, the vibrant camp kicked off with unforgettable memories: a visit to Baosheng Temple and an immersive experience in playing lianxiang; a stroll through the ancient town to explore its bridge‑related culture; and a tour of the Shen Residence, where creative artistry brought children’s imaginations to life—each activity leaving the kids enriched and inspired.

 

 

The next day

The excitement continues with intangible cultural heritage experiences.

Morning: Luzhi Water Town Women’s Costume Workshop, Fuli Canteen

Led by their teacher, the children visited the Luzhi Water Town Women’s Costume Workshop to learn about the origins, evolution, preservation, and transmission of the “Qinglian Shirt and Lotus‑Pink Skirt.” They then crafted their own handmade cloth bags, experiencing the charm and warmth of traditional craftsmanship with every stitch.

 

 

At the Pu Li Canteen’s green‑bean‑paste dumpling‑making event, laughter filled the air and the atmosphere was warm and harmonious. Under their teachers’ guidance, the children added water to the flour, kneaded it into a dough, and stuffed it with filling—honing their hands‑on skills and savoring the joy of success. To round off the activity, they enjoyed authentic Luzhi delicacies, leaving them thoroughly satisfied.

 

 

Afternoon: Luzhi Celebrity Hall, Luzhi Sauce Factory, and the Wang Tao Memorial Hall

After a hearty meal and some refreshments, the children engaged in a timeless dialogue with historical figures at the Luzhi Celebrity Hall, learning about their achievements and drawing inspiration from their wisdom and spirit.

 

 

At the Luzhi Soy Sauce Workshop, visitors can tour a traditional soy sauce‑brewing facility and learn about the time‑honored techniques behind Luzhi radish pickles, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage delicacy. Here, children can even try their hand at jar‑filling the radish heads—taking home not just a finished product, but also a deeper appreciation for and commitment to preserving this cherished artisanal craft.

 

 

At the Wang Tao Memorial Hall, children gained a deeper appreciation for the power of literature by admiring his works and learning about his life. Meanwhile, the movable-type printing workshop allowed them to experience firsthand the timeless charm of one of China’s Four Great Inventions.

 

 

Day 3

Study-and-Practice Program Concludes Successfully

Morning: Wansheng Rice Mill

On the third day of the program, the children visited Wansheng Rice Shop to learn about the bustling rice market during the Republic of China era; they stopped by the Water Town Agricultural Tools Museum to explore a “real-life” history of Jiangnan farming implements; and through hands-on experiences such as weighing and milling rice, they gained a profound appreciation for the truth behind the saying, “Every grain is earned through hard work.”

 

 

All day: Luzhi’s mythical little peddler “Sells Xie Le in Six Hours”

After touring the Wansheng Rice Shop, along the picturesque Ye Shengtao Path—where every step offers a scenic view—children could be seen following in the footsteps of the literary master. The lively “Tao” Treasure Market kicked off with a bang, as kids set up permanent stalls along the path, selling secondhand books and toys, as well as handmade crafts, artwork, and items provided by the Writing Workshop.

 

 

During the “I’m Little He and the Little Peddler” activity, children formed mobile mini‑supermarkets in groups of five. Transforming into enthusiastic “little peddlers,” they set up stalls along the ancient street to sell goods, bravely engaging with strangers and gaining valuable real‑world experience.

 

 

All proceeds from this event will go directly to the children. Every successful sale and every increase in revenue on site fills them with a sense of accomplishment.

The master‑class lectures held at the Contemporary Pavilion have enriched the children’s knowledge. During the “600‑Second Speed‑Writing Contest,” the students wrote with great enthusiasm, transforming their observations, experiences, feelings, and thoughts as little peddlers into vivid prose. The awards bestowed upon the top three young writers allowed them to experience the satisfaction of seeing their efforts rewarded.

 

 

At the closing ceremony, joy and a touch of reluctance filled the air. The teachers’ warm, heartfelt remarks and the certificates each child received left them brimming with pride and deep emotion.
