On the afternoon of August 11, a commemorative event marking the nation’s fourth National Fitness Day, along with the “2012 Suzhou Luzhi Water Town Women’s Costume Performance Competition,” was held at the Luzhi Jiangnan Cultural Park. Hosted by the Luzhi Town People’s Government and co-organized by the Luzhi Town Women’s Federation and the Culture and Sports Center, the event featured 26 amateur performance teams from villages and communities across Luzhi Town. Through a rich array of acts—including yangge dance, square dance, lianxiang dance, waist-drum dance, and fan dance—the teams vividly showcased the cultural charm of women’s traditional costumes in Luzhi’s water‑town region. After a tense and spirited competition, the “Most Dazzling Ethnic Style” lianxiang performance from Chenghu Village took first prize.
The Water‑Town Costume Performance Competition has been held annually since 2005, and this year marks its eighth edition. The event aims to highlight and promote Luzhi’s cultural heritage, safeguard the national intangible cultural heritage, and enrich the cultural lives of the general public. Today, the competition has become a key platform for fostering a vibrant atmosphere of nationwide fitness and for showcasing the distinctive brand of Luzhi as a renowned hometown of Chinese folk culture and art. This initiative not only fully showcases the spirit and demeanor of the women of Luzhi Town in the new era, but also carries forward and revitalizes the fine traditional culture of the Chinese nation, highlighting the essence of folk arts. Moreover, it has given strong impetus to the vigorous development of mass sports in Luzhi Town, ushering in a new wave of enthusiasm for nationwide fitness activities.
