Decoding the Genetic Code of Jiangnan Civilization

The cultural documentary series “Famous Towns of Humanistic Heritage,” produced by CCTV‑1, China Media Group’s flagship general‑interest channel, premiered on March 24 at 6:30 p.m. on CCTV‑1. Today, the seventh episode takes viewers to Luzhi, inviting them on a journey to uncover the rich cultural legacy of this renowned town.

This thousand-year-old water town, nestled in the southeastern part of Suzhou’s ancient city, is renowned for its crisscrossing waterways and an array of exquisitely designed historic bridges. Strolling along the cobbled lanes, one can watch a traditional oar‑propelled boat glide gently between tiled roofs and whitewashed walls, while the weathered “boat‑mooring stones” lining the banks bear witness to the prosperity of ages past and present. The “water‑drawing device” unearthed at the Chenghu site tells of the ingenious agricultural wisdom of Luzhi’s early inhabitants, who adapted their practices to the local environment millennia ago, thus corroborating the historical record of agricultural tool innovations preserved in the “Laisi Jing.”

Over the years, Luzhi has preserved and carried forward the cultural heritage of this water town. Though its waterways no longer serve as a freight network, their intact aquatic fabric has become a living cultural legacy. As a national-level intangible cultural heritage, Luzhi’s traditional women’s attire continues to be passed down in the daily lives of local residents, where historical legacies and contemporary life coexist in harmonious balance. This ancient Jiangnan town, as old as Suzhou’s historic city center, is now embracing a fresh, open‑minded, and inclusive spirit, allowing its millennial cultural lineage to shine with the brilliance of our times.
