The 2011 China International Tourism Apparel and Costume Expo, jointly hosted by the China National Tourism Administration and the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province, along with the opening ceremony of the 14th China Suzhou International Tourism Festival, was solemnly held on April 21 on the banks of Suzhou’s ancient Grand Canal. Spanning three months, the event featured a range of key activities, including the 2011 China International Tourism Apparel and Costume Exhibition, the finals of the 2011 China International Tourism Professional Attire Creative Design Competition, the China Tourism Apparel Development Summit, the fourth “National Joyful Competition” event, as well as Suzhou Tourism Consultation Day and a promotional showcase for new tourism products. The expo and festival were officially opened by Shao Qiwei, Director of the China National Tourism Administration. Speeches were delivered by Shi Heping, Vice Governor of Jiangsu Province; Du Yuzhou, President of the China National Textile Industry Association; and Wu Wenxue, Member of the Party Leadership Group of the China National Tourism Administration and Director-General of the Planning, Development and Finance Department.

The opening ceremony was held on the waters of Suzhou’s Huan Cheng River, from Guxumen to Mida Bridge, highlighting the city’s rich historical and cultural heritage and creating a three-dimensional aquatic tableau of “water-city revelry and a fashionable gala.” During the ceremony, the Organizing Committee of the Tourism Expo presented awards to the winning organizations and individuals of the 2011 China Tourism Professional Attire Creative Design Competition and the 2011 China Tourism Professional Attire Showcase Competition. Nineteen colorful boats took part in the opening‑day parade.

According to reports, this Travel Expo and Tourism Festival features 12 major events and 65 accompanying activities. The key components of the Travel Expo include two competitions—the 2011 China International Tourism Professional Attire Creative Design Competition and the China Tourism Professional Attire Showcase—and one exhibition—the 2011 China International Tourism Apparel and Accessories Exhibition. In addition, the program encompasses the China International Tourism Apparel and Accessories Development Summit, on-site matchmaking sessions with a hundred leading department stores, launch events for renowned brands, the 2011–2012 China Autumn/Winter Fashion Trend Presentation, and “Suzhou Embroidery Across the World”—an exhibition showcasing the exquisite embroidery skills of a hundred master artisans—among other initiatives aimed at fostering the integrated development of China’s tourism sector and related industries such as apparel and accessories.
