On July 19, Suzhou City convened a citywide on-site conference on the construction of beautiful towns and villages (urban areas) in Luzhi Town. Attending the meeting were municipal leaders including Zhou Naixiang, Deputy Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee and Mayor; Chen Zhenyi, Deputy Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee; and Vice Mayors Xu Huimin, Wang Guorong, Gu Haidong, and Zhou Wei, along with principal officials from the Municipal Agricultural Commission, the Housing and Urban–Rural Development Bureau, the Planning Department, and the Urban Appearance and Municipal Services Administration. Also present were the principal and responsible leaders of the governments of all cities and districts, as well as relevant department heads, and approximately 130 participants, including the Party secretaries of the towns where the city’s 16 demonstration sites for beautiful town construction are located.
At the meeting, participants toured the three major development zones of Luzhi Town—the Chenghu Agricultural Park, the Ancient Town District, and the New Town District—assessing progress in the synchronized advancement of industrialization, urbanization, and agricultural modernization, as well as the “three‑in‑one” approach to concentrated development. They also conducted on-site inspections at three key sites: the 3,500‑mu core base for aquatic vegetables, Liudaowan & Hot Runner Co., Ltd., and the protective restoration projects along Shangtang Street and Xiatang Street in the second phase of Luzhi Ancient Town’s East Market.
Luzhi Town delivered a presentation titled “Upholding Transformation and Innovation, Promoting Urban–Rural Integration, and Building a Beautiful New Luzhi.” Representatives from Haiyu Town of Changshu City, the Municipal Housing and Urban–Rural Development Bureau, the Municipal Urban Appearance and Town Management Bureau, and the Municipal Planning Bureau also presented their views.
Mayor Zhou Naixiang pointed out that the construction of beautiful towns and villages is a comprehensive, system‑wide undertaking with broad implications, requiring meticulous organization, careful planning, and concerted efforts across all units and departments. The Lüzhí Town visited today demonstrates clear thinking, strong commitment, and rapid results, making it an exemplary model. He also laid out the city’s overall strategy for advancing this initiative: first, adhere to scientific planning to ensure orderly implementation; second, increase investment and strengthen technical standards; third, clearly define responsible entities and enforce rigorous oversight and performance evaluation. It is essential to earnestly solicit public input, ensuring that the people are satisfied and reap tangible benefits.
Deputy Secretary Chen Zhenyi urged that the construction of beautiful towns be organized and implemented with utmost diligence, in strict accordance with the requirements of the Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government as well as the work standards set by all relevant departments, so as to establish a new benchmark for this initiative and truly build the Suzhou brand.
