Ye Shengtao, whose given name was Shaoyun and courtesy name was Bingchen, was a renowned Chinese writer, educator, literary publisher, and social activist. In 1917, at the age of twenty-three, he accepted an invitation from his teachers and friends to teach at the Wuxian County Fifth Higher Primary School in Luzhi—commonly known as “Wugao”—where he achieved success in educational reform and reaped abundant rewards in his new‑literature writing, thus laying the foundation for his remarkable life.

Old Master Ye was not only deeply concerned with primary education but also wholeheartedly devoted to the nation’s destiny and the revolutionary cause. Beginning with the May Fourth Movement of 1919, he actively threw himself into the tide of struggle against imperialism and feudalism, making his due contribution to the liberation of the Chinese people.

After the founding of New China, Mr. Ye continued to grace the political stage as a dedicated public servant and a candid friend of the Communist Party of China, boldly thinking, speaking, and acting, earning widespread admiration from the people.
In 1988, the Wuxian CPPCC restored the former site of the “Fifth High School,” where Ye Shengtao once taught, and established it as the Ye Shengtao Memorial Hall, in commemoration of his outstanding contributions to basic education, literary creation, editorial and publishing work, and social activities.

Today, the Ye Shengtao Memorial Hall has been designated as a Patriotic Education Base of Jiangsu Province and a Base for Moral Education in Schools within the province. It is open free of charge to minors and has become an important venue for learning about Mr. Ye’s life and achievements and for promoting his spirit of patriotism.

The Ye Shengtao Memorial Hall largely preserves the original appearance of the “Five Heights,” with buildings such as the Mandarin Duck Hall, the Women’s Building, and the Four-Sided Hall remaining in excellent condition. The Mandarin Duck Hall served as both dormitories and offices for teachers, while the Women’s Building housed classrooms and administrative offices.

The Four‑Sided Hall, surrounded on all sides by open space, was once the exhibition room of the “Five Highs.” Old Master Ye often made the progressive Chinese and foreign books he had purchased available for students to read. Today, the hall houses a death mask of Old Master Ye, open to visitors.

A visit to the Ye Shengtao Memorial Hall reveals, through detailed texts and authentic exhibits, the illustrious life of Mr. Ye. He affectionately referred to Luzhi as his “second hometown,” and Luzhi, in turn, witnessed both his educational and literary endeavors.

In 1988, Mr. Ye passed away after a long illness and was laid to rest in Luzhi. His tomb is situated in the western courtyard of Baosheng Temple in Luzhi, adjacent to the former site of the “Five Highs.” Surrounded by lush pines and cypresses and towering ginkgo trees, it serves as a place for future generations to pay their respects and cherish his memory.

Before Ye Shengtao’s tomb stands the Weiyán Pavilion. “Weiyán” was the name of Mr. Ye’s former study, embodying the spirit of “never tiring of learning and never ceasing to toil,” and was chosen to commemorate his vigorous, upward‑looking spirit of enterprise.
