During the Tang Dynasty, Yang Huizhi, known as the “Sage of Sculpture,” left behind sculpted arhat murals that resemble three-dimensional landscapes and figures. Ye Shengtao, while teaching at the Wugao School, forged a deep bond with Luzhi, declaring it his “second hometown.” Meanwhile, the vibrant colors and distinctive designs of the Luzhi water-town women’s attire—known as the “Qinglian Shirt”—continue to captivate all who behold them.
The murmuring, crystal‑clear streams of Luzhi—“the shore of the Five Lakes” and “the confluence of the Six Marshes”—evoke the reclusive, self‑satisfied charm captured by the late Tang poet Lu Guimeng: “With a few sails hoisted in drunken ease, I wait only for the wind that bears the carp.” And the graceful scene of painted boats moored at the shore in springtime is celebrated by the Yuan‑dynasty painter Ni Zan as “When the spring breeze blows, it seems to have anchored at Wuling Bay.”
Ancient bridges stand gracefully, small boats gently sway, winding paths lead to secluded beauty; strolling through the streets, one is met with endless, enchanting vistas that leave one entranced and reluctant to depart.
Within the modest old town, residents still uphold a traditional way of life, while the burgeoning coffeehouses and wine bars, though different in character, together capture the freedom and tranquility of the Jiangnan water towns.
The guqin’s clear, resonant tones soar with vigor, while the tea’s aroma is warm, mellow, and refreshingly pure. At this guesthouse, guests feel right at home, allowing body and soul to find rest in the ancient town of Luzhi—both a small, everyday joy amidst life’s bustling scenes and a poetic, far‑off memory of Jiangnan.
Among time-honored restaurants, Suzhou-style dishes such as chicken‑head rice with shrimp, braised water bamboo shoots in oil, pork stewed with taro, salted river prawns, white fish from Cheng Lake, eel soup drizzled with hot oil, and Fuli duck congee all eloquently convey the refined flavors of the Jiangnan region.
