Exhibition Viewing: Jiangnan

Luzhi has long been celebrated in poets’ verses as a utopian haven of Jiangnan, and a boundless source of inspiration for painters.

Recently, the “Jiangnan Culture” series of art exhibitions—featuring the renowned painter Shen Mo’s exhibition “Ink and Sound: A Melodic Ode to Jiangnan”—was officially inaugurated at the Shen Residence in Luzhi.

Shen Mo, also known as Mozi and Amu, has been devoted to painting since childhood. He graduated from the Chinese Painting Department of Nanjing University of the Arts, where he studied under such renowned masters as Ya Ming and Chen Dayu. With a solid foundation in painting, he has also meticulously studied the works of earlier masters like Shitao and Huang Binhong, deeply inheriting their traditions while drawing widely from diverse sources.

His paintings employ the traditional ink‑wash technique to depict the picturesque landscapes of Wuzhong, while also incorporating elements of Western abstract art, thus creating a distinctive Jiangnan aesthetic that seamlessly blends Eastern and Western sensibilities.

Stroll through the Shen Residence, savor the Jiangnan landscape rendered in the subtle gradations of ink, and indulge in a dual feast for the eyes and the soul—let yourself be fully immersed in the vibrant spirit of spring’s artistry.

Into the Painting: Luzhi

The ink‑and‑wash charm of Jiangnan is not confined to a single scroll; it lives on in the whitewashed walls and dark-tiled roofs, amid blossoms red and willows green, of Luzhi Ancient Town.

After visiting the art exhibition, I stepped into the picturesque town of Luzhi. Emerging from the gate of the Shen Residence, I found myself in the bustling, vibrant waterside life of Xihui Street.

The old street is filled with the delicate fragrance of qingtuan, and as you stroll along, savoring one in hand, your eyes take in every picturesque scene.

The bluestone slabs wind their way deep into the narrow alley, and the scent of lilacs rises in my mind. The indigo‑gray eaves of Jiangnan houses are once again adorned with a few magnolia blossoms, lending the scene a touch of spring.

Emerald-green ribbons brush across the mirror-like water, and a hand‑rowed boat stirs up shimmering ripples as it glides beneath the ancient stone arch bridge.

Slow your pace and immerse yourself in the authentic waterside village of dreams. Before your eyes, the springtime scenery unfolds like a painted scroll—relax your body and mind, and wander at leisure—a true, firsthand experience of the picturesque town of Luzhi.

Grab your paintbrush, set up your easel—here, the scenery invites everyone to capture its beauty. The waterways where spring waters gently flow, the dark‑gray eaves adorned with red lanterns, the stone arch bridges that seem to stand as living poems, and the timelessly elegant Baosheng Temple… In the attentive “painter’s eye,” there is always a corner of Luzhi worth pausing to render with care.

And so, in ancient temples, along riverbanks, and beneath covered walkways, painters seem to have sprung up everywhere—employing ink washes, sketching with delicate lines, and blending hues—to bring their own vision of Jiangnan to life.
