As a site on the Tentative List for World Heritage, Luzhi Town has taken proactive measures to prepare for the 28th session of the World Heritage Committee. The town Party Committee and the town government have undertaken comprehensive preparatory work, adhering to high standards and stringent requirements in both infrastructure and institutional frameworks.
Hardware improvements: First, efforts are being focused on the external environment. Following the undergrounding of overhead cables in the ancient town area in 2003, a further investment of RMB 15 million was made this February to comprehensively renovate the pavement, street lighting, landscaping, and utility pipelines along Xiaoshi Road—the main access route to the ancient town—transforming it into a new highlight of the district. Meanwhile, the “Ancient Town Central Area Water Ecological Restoration Demonstration Project,” currently under initiation, will play a crucial role in improving water quality, clearing river channels, and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the waterfront. Second, work is being done to enhance the internal environment. A comprehensive clean-up and improvement initiative will be carried out along the approaches to the ancient town, along its perimeter, and within the town itself; green space planning and layout will be strengthened; shop signs reflecting the town’s cultural identity, distinctive character, and waterside charm will be redesigned; non‑compliant awnings will be removed; and signage and directional markers will be replaced. In addition, multilingual text and explanatory materials will be added throughout, ensuring that visitors to Luzhi find the ancient town both pristine and picturesque, as well as refined and elegant.
On the software front: First, a “Leading Group for Preparing for the World Heritage Site Inspection in Luzhi Town” was established, and a series of specific tasks and requirements were planned, including the design of exhibition panels highlighting Luzhi’s “water‑centric” essence and its “ancient” character; the development of guided tour itineraries and schedules; and the formulation of measures to ensure environmental cleanliness and maintain order along the routes. Second, efforts were made to enhance the quality of tour guides and intensify promotional activities. To project a positive image of Luzhi as a welcoming gateway, comprehensive training was strengthened to improve the overall competence of tour guides, thereby raising the standard and quality of their services. In addition, promotional materials such as a “Luzhi Overview,” tourism logos, and audio‑guide scripts were produced, and programs showcasing Luzhi’s traditional culture and performing arts were launched. These initiatives further highlighted the town’s achievements in preserving its historic architecture, time‑honored cultural heritage, and distinctive historical ambiance, boosting Luzhi’s visibility and accelerating the growth of its ancient‑town tourism industry.
