Lu Guimeng (c. 830–881), courtesy name Luwang, was a renowned literary figure and agronomist of the Tang dynasty. Born into a distinguished family, he served as an official in the administrations of Huzhou and Suzhou. Frustrated by his career’s lack of advancement, he retired to Fuli in Songjiang (present-day Luzhi Town), where he led a life devoted to both farming and scholarly pursuits. In Luzhi, he not only left behind a substantial body of poetry and prose but also immersed himself in agricultural practice, authoring “Laisi Jing,” the first specialized treatise on farming implements in Chinese history, which exerted a profound influence on subsequent generations of agricultural scholarship.

To this day, the ancient town still preserves numerous relics associated with him. Beneath the ginkgo tree in the west courtyard of Baosheng Temple stands his symbolic tomb; the stone stele before it bears the inscription “Tomb of Mr. Fu Li of Tang Xianfu.” Memorial structures such as Qingfeng Pavilion, Chuihong Bridge, and the duck ponds and marshes likewise evoke memories of his reclusive life—once spent engaging in duck‑fighting and savoring tea. Local specialties like “Fu Li Pig’s Trotters” and “Fu Li Duck,” too, are said to be linked to him. Indeed, Lu Guimeng’s refined elegance and noble character have left an indelible mark on every inch of Luzhi’s land and in its collective memory.
