Ye Shengtao (1894–1988), born Ye Shaoyun, was a native of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. He was a renowned modern Chinese educator, writer, literary publisher, and social activist. For nearly five years (1917–1922), he taught at the Fifth Higher Primary School of Wuxian County, located in the ancient town of Luzhi in Suzhou—now the Ye Shengtao Memorial Hall. He regarded this period as “the true beginning of both his educational and creative careers,” and affectionately referred to Luzhi as his “second hometown.”

During his time in Luzhi, Ye Shengtao, together with like-minded colleagues, undertook bold reforms of textbooks, curricula, and teaching methods, while actively promoting new ideas and new culture. He founded the literary and art weekly “Zhisheng,” where he penned such works as “The Scarecrow” (China’s first collection of fairy tales) and “Ni Huanzhi” (the country’s first full-length novel). Much of the material and many of the characters in these works were drawn from life in Luzhi. In addition, he spearheaded the drafting of the “Primary School Chinese Curriculum Standards,” which for the first time standardized the subject name as “Chinese.”

In 1988, following his passing, Ye Shengtao was laid to rest in Luzhi. His memorial hall is now designated as a Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Site and an educational base for patriotism.
