Shen Baihan (1883–1953), whose given name was Changwei, styled himself Baihan and went by the art names Xuechen and Suyuan. A native of Luzhi Town in Wuxian County, Jiangsu Province, he was a prominent member of the Tongmenghui and an esteemed educator of modern times. Born into a distinguished local scholarly family with extensive holdings, his clan was so influential that the town was once known as “Shen’s Half-Town.”

Coming from a distinguished local scholarly family with extensive holdings, his clan was so influential that the town was once nicknamed “Shen’s Half-Town.”

In his early years, he studied at a family‑run private school. In 1904, he went to Japan to pursue studies in the Department of Education at Waseda University, where he joined the Tongmenghui. Upon returning to China in 1916, he devoted himself to the development of his hometown, transforming the Fuli Academy into Fuli Primary School, introducing modern curricula, and establishing the Peiben Kindergarten. He also co‑founded industrial enterprises such as an electric‑light plant and a telephone exchange, and took part in efforts to preserve the Tang‑dynasty Arhat statues at Baosheng Temple. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he attended the first session of the Southern Jiangsu CPPCC Conference as a specially invited delegate. His former residence, the Shen Residence, located at No. 23 Shangtang Street, Xihui, Luzhi Town, was built in 1873 and is a quintessential example of traditional Suzhou architecture; it is now designated as a cultural relic protection site by Suzhou City. The Le Shan Hall within the compound serves as its central structure and has been used as a filming location for numerous movies and television series, including “Dream of the Red Chamber” and “Fortress Besieged.”
