Overview Luzhi
Luzhi Ancient Town is as old as Suzhou’s ancient city, boasting a rich history of more than 2,500 years. It is steeped in cultural heritage, home to numerous historic sites and scenic attractions, and dotted with charming人文 landscapes. As one of the best-preserved water-town ancient towns in the Taihu Basin, it is surrounded by lakes, ponds, pools, and marshes, earning it the reputations of “the shore of the Five Lakes” and “the confluence of Six Waters.” “Small bridges abound along the waterways, and every household seems to rest upon the riverbank.” The town has long been celebrated for its abundance of water, bridges, narrow lanes, ancient residences, and distinguished figures. Originally, it boasted seventy-two and a half ancient bridges—so many that locals joked, “a bridge every five steps”—of which forty-one remain today. Bridge expert Mao Yisheng hailed it as an “ancient Chinese bridge museum.” Moreover, Luzhi is renowned worldwide for the sculpted arhat murals at Baosheng Temple, among the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units, as well as for the traditional water-town women’s costumes of Luzhi, designated as part of the nation’s first batch of intangible cultural heritage.
Within the ancient town of Luzhi, visitors can explore attractions such as Baosheng Temple, the Ye Shengtao Memorial Hall, the Shen Residence, Wansheng Rice Shop, the Wang Tao Memorial Hall, and the Xiao Residence. The area also boasts a rich array of local delicacies, including Luzhi radishes, Fuli pig’s trotters, Fuli duck, qingtuan (green rice balls), haitang cakes, and zongzi candy. Among these, “Luzhi radishes” and “Fuli pig’s trotters” are particularly renowned throughout China.
It has successively been awarded such prestigious honors as “National 4A‑Level Tourist Scenic Area,” “Famous Town of Chinese History and Culture,” “Town of Outstanding Ethnic Architectural Charm in China,” “National Town of Distinctive Landscape Tourism,” “One of the Ten Ancient Towns of the Yangtze River Delta,” “Chinese Garden Town,” “One of the First Batch of Chinese Characteristic Small Towns,” and “Suzhou Chenghu International Slow City.” In 2012, it was also included on the Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in China.
